What you should know first

A bill is more than one total peso amount. It contains your energy use, billing period, rate structure, and fixed or pass-through charges. If you do not understand these basics, your solar estimate and appliance decisions can easily start from the wrong assumptions.

The bill total is not the same thing as electricity consumption.

Separate kWh from tariff components

Meralco’s bill breakdown shows that customer payments contain generation, transmission, system-loss, distribution, taxes, and other regulated components. Solar mainly changes the energy drawn from the grid; some fixed or non-bypassable charges may remain.

For sizing, monthly kWh and billing days are more useful than the peso total alone. A high bill can come from higher consumption, higher rates, a longer billing period, or a combination of all three.

Record kWh, billing days, and the effective all-in peso/kWh.

Compare the same season across years when possible.

Do not assume solar removes every line item on the bill.

Look for patterns before blaming one appliance

Residential energy surveys show that cooling, water heating, refrigeration, and other long-running loads often dominate electricity use. In the Philippines, the exact mix depends on climate, occupancy, appliances, and whether large loads run during the day.

A year of bills can reveal seasonal heat, occupancy changes, or equipment faults. That history is more reliable than estimating a solar system from one unusually high month.

Use 6–12 months of bills for a solar assessment.

Investigate sudden changes before sizing around them.

Pair bill analysis with an appliance and operating-hours inventory.

The same peso bill can represent different electricity use

A rate increase can raise the bill even when kWh stays flat. A longer billing period can also raise kWh without a real change in daily use. Reading only the total can lead to an oversized solar estimate.

Normalize usage before sizing solar or blaming an appliance.

Decision rule

Use at least six months of kWh and billing days; use twelve months when air-conditioning or seasonal business loads are significant.

Practical checklist

Collect a year of bills if possible and compute average monthly kWh use.

Separate energy-related charges from fixed charges.

Note the billing period length before comparing months.

Use this information as the input for any solar sizing conversation.

Good solar planning starts with a clear picture of electricity consumption. The bill is where that picture begins.
